Big Nurse Audrey Iris “Peanut” Wolfberg (née Koch), age 95, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. Born on December 8, 1929, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Audrey lived a life defined by compassion, innovation, and unwavering dedication to others.
Audrey graduated from Altoona Area High School in Altoona, PA, where she was known not only for her academic achievements but also for her fierce badminton skills. She went on to earn her nursing degree from The Hospital of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA., launching a groundbreaking career in medicine that would leave an indelible mark on the field of cardiac surgery.
While at Jefferson, Audrey played a pivotal role in the first successful open-heart surgery performed at the institution. Her work with the initial heart-lung machine and its patients helped refine and develop this life-saving technology, now a cornerstone of modern cardiac care. Her contributions to medical science were matched only by her tireless devotion to patient care and mentorship within the nursing profession.
Audrey’s legacy extends far beyond the hospital walls. A lifetime member of Congregation Beth El in Sunbury, PA., she was deeply rooted in her faith and community. As a young girl growing up in Altoona, she made history as the first girl from her synagogue to become a Bat Mitzvah—an early sign of her trailblazing spirit.
Family was everything to Audrey. She is lovingly remembered by her sister Darthy Davis and brother David Koch; her daughter Debra (Wolfberg) Mease and husband Fred; sons Michael Wolfberg and wife Laura (Boynton), and Daniel Wolfberg and wife Susan (Green). Audrey also cherished many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who brought joy to her long life. She was predeceased by her beloved parents Sidney and Miriam Koch and two sons lost early in life.
Audrey’s warmth extended into every corner of her life. Whether knitting sweaters for humans or penguins alike—a testament to both her skill and sense of humor—or volunteering with numerous organizations throughout the years, she gave freely of herself without hesitation. An avid golfer known for hitting it straight down the middle with her trusty 7 wood every time, she approached life with grace, precision, and quiet strength.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, athlete, volunteer, athletic supporter (in every sense), voracious reader, and above all, a gentle soul who dedicated herself wholly to helping others.
May Audrey’s memory be a blessing and bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A Burial will be held on May 27, 2025, from 01:00 PM to 01:30 PM at Congregation Beth El Cemetery at the Intersection of Prince & 6th Streets, Northumberland. A Memorial Gathering will be held on May 27, 2025, from 01:30 PM to 02:30 PM at Congregation Beth El, 249 Arch Street, Sunbury.
