Carl L. Smith

Carl Leon Smith, 75, of Liverpool, entered into rest on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Premier at Perry Village, New Bloomfield.

Carl was born on October 31, 1950, in Harrisburg. He was the son of the late Carl S. Smith and Mary A. (Chubb) Swope. He was a 1968 graduate of Greenwood High School.  On August 14, 1971, he married the former Cathy Hackenberger, who survives.

Carl was employed for ten years with the Carpenter’s Union 287, Harrisburg and was formerly employed with Novinger’s Inc., Harrisburg and R & R Plaster and Drywall, Harrisburg. Following his retirement, he worked as a subcontractor for Premier Construction, Lancaster.

He was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Liverpool, a member of the choir and former council member. Carl also held membership with the Middleburg Masonic Lodge No. 619 and the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA) Harrisburg Chapter. His greatest love was to sing. He shared his vocal talent by singing at many funerals and weddings. Carl also enjoyed fishing, mowing the lawn, gardening, and frequent trips to the Perry County Historians.

In addition to his loving wife Cathy of 55 years, Carl is survived by his three children Todd M. Smith and his wife Ann, Elizabeth “Betsy” Pilotti and her husband Anthony, and Nicholas E. Smith, grandchildren Devin A. Smith and his wife Brooke, Collin A. Smith and his wife Anna, Carter E. Smith, Josh and Joley Auxer, Tommy and Tabitha Krout, and two great-grandchildren Beau and Brody Auxer.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather LeDane Swope.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1000 N. Front Street, Liverpool followed by a Celebration of Life memorial service at 6:30 p.m. with the Rev. Allen Vijjeswarapu officiating.

Private interment will be in the adjoining church columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Carl to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1000 N. Front Street, Liverpool, PA 17045 or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
