Craig Mitterling Obituary

Craig Eugene Mitterling, 73, of Port Trevorton, PA, went to be with his Savior on November 23, 2025. He battled kidney disease for many years and spent his final days at home surrounded by his loving family.

Craig was born on August 24, 1952, in Danville, PA, to Guy and Ruth (Maurer) Mitterling and was the oldest of three children.

Craig was a 1970 graduate of Selinsgrove Area High School. In 1974 he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education.

Craig was a member of Witmer’s United Methodist Church for most of his life. As a teenager at Witmer’s Church, he committed his life to following Jesus and spent several decades teaching Sunday School, leading youth groups, coordinating mission trips, and serving as chairman of various committees. For the past several years Craig was a member of Selinsgrove Church of the Nazarene, where he continued to serve others, especially through the S.U.N. Area Work and Witness ministry.

Craig was passionate about local, domestic, and international Christian missions. He coordinated disaster relief and rebuilding efforts in numerous states through Samaritan’s Purse and supported impoverished communities during multiple short-term mission trips to Honduras. Craig had the heart of a servant and consistently looked for ways to serve others.

On February 12, 1977, Craig married his “great match” and helpmate, Elizabeth “Betsy” Boyer, his wife of more than 48 years. Together they raised three wonderful sons on the family farm, which has been family owned and operated for 100 years. Craig loved to farm and especially enjoyed growing produce, raking and baling hay, and raising livestock. In addition to farming, Craig was also employed over the years by IGA, Leon Epler Farms, Middleburg Livestock Auction, and the United States Postal Service. He loved to be outside and especially enjoyed visiting Tall Timbers near Troxelville.

Craig served as a Union Township Auditor for 30 years, Union Township Secretary Treasurer for 12 years, and was the Secretary Treasurer of Union/Chapman Regional Authority from 2018 until his death. He was a member of the PA Farm Bureau and various other agricultural organizations.

Craig’s favorite Bible verse was Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (NIV) He was passionate about serving others through church, on the farm, and in the community.

Craig is survived by his wife Betsy; three sons, Nathan (Mary) Mitterling of Brookshire, TX, Andrew (Jodie) Mitterling of Selinsgrove, and Jared (Brandi) Mitterling of Halifax; grandchildren Sarah, Caleb, Savannah, Bowman, Winnie, and Maela; stepmother Mary Jane
Mitterling; sister Ann (Edward) Auman; sister-in-law Karen M. Johnson; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Craig was preceded in death by his parents, brother Brent, nephew Justin Mitterling, and granddaughter Hannah.
