Dennis Leroy Shoemaker, born on August 4, 1943, in Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, at Nottingham Village Nursing Center in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. He was 82 years old.
Dennis led a life marked by service and community involvement. After graduating from Washington High School in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1961, he earned an associate degree from Phoenix Junior College and later completed a bachelor's degree in finance at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania.
From 1964 to 1969, Dennis served his country honorably as a machinist's mate in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era. He completed three tours of duty aboard the USS Hoel, USS McCaffrey, and USS Dewey.
Following his military service and academic pursuits, Dennis remained engaged in civic life. He was an active member of both Kiwanis and the American Legion throughout his life, holding several offices within each organization.
Dennis was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Northumberland.
Dennis was preceded in death by his spouse, Rev. Susan Shellman Baer, and his parents, Leroy Shoemaker and Jeanne (Mosier) Shoemaker.
Dennis is survived by his former spouse, Dorine Shoemaker Renninger of Selinsgrove; his son, Matthew Shoemaker of Selinsgrove; his daughter, Melissa Bechtel and her husband, Bill Bechtel of Selinsgrove; and two granddaughters, Zoey Shoemaker of Lebanon and Miley Shoemaker of Selinsgrove. His siblings also survive him: brother William Shoemaker and sister-in-law Judy Shoemaker of Nowata, Oklahoma; brother David Shoemaker and sister-in-law Betty Shoemaker of Chico, California; and sister Leanne Owens and brother-in-law Jim Owens of Cartersville, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dennis's memory to The American Legion Post #25, 524 S. Market Street, Selinsgrove, PA.
The family would like to thank the staff of both Nottingham Village Retirement Center and Nursing Center for their care of Dennis over the last several years.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
