Eugene “Gene” Edward Kardohely, 85, of Shamokin Dam and formerly of Hawk Run, PA was called home to the Lord, surrounded by his family, on Friday, July 25, 2025, at WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Gene was born on November 9, 1939, in Hawk Run, Clearfield Co., PA to Stephen and Elizabeth (Ruman) Kardohely. A strong work ethic, hard work, and dedication to seeing things through were values instilled in Gene from a very young age. He would share his stories and memories with family and friends of his parents, siblings, and growing up in Hawk Run- a place that still remained close to his heart. This strong drive and determination led to his service in the United States Army following his graduation in 1957 from Morrisdale High School. After concluding his military service, his desire to serve his community continued and led to his acceptance into the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. It was through his service to others as a Pennsylvania State Trooper that led him to many parts of Pennsylvania throughout his long career. In April 1968, he married Margaret Petrof of Grassflat, PA. Throughout their 57 years of marriage, they were blessed with and raised two children. Gene is survived by his loving and devoted wife Margie of Shamokin Dam, his son Mark and his wife Linda of Quakertown, his daughter Lisa and her husband Colonel Christopher Portele, and his grandson, Joseph Portele all of Lorton, VA. His grandson Joseph was his greatest joy and holds a special place in his Pop-Pop’s heart. Also surviving are his older sister, Eleanor Miller and her husband Daniel of Bryn Mawr, his younger brother, Frederick Kardohely and his wife Dorothy of Clearfield, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gene was preceded in death by his parents. Gene retired after 31 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Pennsylvania State Police. However, retirement did not slow him down. Gene was the go-to guy when anyone needed help with lawn care and maintenance, painting, car detailing, and repairs. His skill, precision, attention to detail and quality work, and amazing sense of humor were his trademarks. Gene was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Selinsgrove, with faith being a cornerstone and firm foundation for his life. He lived a life filled with a strong faith to God, love for his family, friendships, and service to others. His passion for cars, completing projects around his house, and spending time with family and friends brought him great joy. He was a devoted Penn State football and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, enjoying many bus trips to Penn State games over the years to cheer on the Nittany Lions. Gene’s life was a life well lived and he was a blessing to all who crossed his path along the journey. Family and friends are invited to his viewing on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 112 Fairview Drive, Selinsgrove. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Father Joshua Cavender, Celebrant. Following the funeral Mass, full military honors will be accorded by the Selinsgrove American Legion Post 25 and the Selinsgrove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gene’s memory may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church or WellSpan Hospice Services, 235 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837. Arrangements by the V. L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High Street, Selinsgrove.
