George Wilhour Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of George A. Wilhour announce his passing to eternal peace, on March 28, 2025, at the age of 94.  George passed away peacefully at the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village and will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, Jeff (wife Karen) and Craig (wife Cherie), his grandchildren, Eric, Ellen, J.J. and Carolyn Wilhour, his great grandchildren, Henry, Liam and Charlotte Wilhour, his sister-in-law, Jane Barnasconi (husband Bob) and his many nieces, nephews, and extended family.   George is preceded in death, by his wife Edith of 72 years, his sister, Evelyn Reitz, brothers, Donald, Harry, and Robert Wilhour, brother-in-law, Eugene Walter, his nephew, Anthony Barnasconi, and his nieces, Janice Lutze and Debbie Reitz Long.

Born in Shamokin Dam, on Feb. 22, 1931, a son of the late C. W. “Pappy” Wilhour and Mildred (Musser) Wilhour. George attended Selinsgrove area schools and graduated in 1949.  During this time, he fell in love with his next-door neighbor, Edith, who was soon to become his wife.  George enlisted in the Navy on March 20, 1951, and served four years during the Korean conflict, stationed in Jacksonville, FL and Norfolk, VA, Naval Air Stations.  Following his completion of service, he and Edith returned home to Shamokin Dam, where they settled and raised their family.

As a skilled mechanic, George worked at the Pennsylvania House Chair Factory and Mobil Oil, before joining the family business, BKW Coach Line, in 1967.  Along with brothers, Don, Harry and Robert, and their father, C.W. “Pappy” Wilhour, (who co-founded the business in 1935), they transformed BKW Coach Line from a small regional carrier into a substantial school and charter bus tour operation.  By 1983, BKW Tours had grown significantly and expanded their operations and rights to transport passengers anywhere in the continental U.S.   The business was eventually sold in 1997 to Rohrer Bus Lines of Harrisburg.

In addition to being a Korean War Navy Veteran, George was a brother in the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Williamsport Consistory, a member of American Legion Post 25 and VFW Post 6631 of Selinsgrove.   George was a lifelong member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Shamokin Dam and was also active with the Greater Susquehanna Valley area Penn State club.  George and wife Edith seldom missed a Penn State home game in earlier years, and they often traveled together on the numerous cross-country bus trips that were an integral part of their lives
