Isabel M. (Kuhns) VanHorn

Isabel Minerva (Kuhns) VanHorn, age 100, of Freeburg entered into rest on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Isabel was born on September 6, 1925, to David and Pauline (Napp) Kuhns of Penns Creek. Early in life she met and married Norman P. VanHorn with whom she spent 51 years. Together, she and Norm built and operated a mom-and-pop store on the top of Shade Mountain across from the Shade Mt. Inn. Waiting on locals and pumping gas led Isabel to know everyone in the area. In 1954 she and Norm moved to Freeburg, where they then operated the Freeburg Hotel. Here, Isabel learned to know and love all of Freeburg’s “characters”. Many years later, after selling the Hotel, Isabel continued her love of cooking for many- at Birdie’s Nest (Shade Mt. Golf Course) and Paxtonville VFW. Isabel continued entertaining friends and family by baking and made everyone feel comfortable in her large home in Freeburg. Isabel wasn’t finished yet! While in her 80’s, she opened the Freeburg Bed and Breakfast. She hosted many travelers and missionaries in her beautiful home and served all a hot breakfast with her signature baked apple pie! Isabel drove until she was 97 and remained sharp and active until her sudden passing. Isabel was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Freeburg. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman P. VanHorn, daughter Rebecca J. VanHorn, son Kerry D. VanHorn, her five brothers and one sister. She is survived by her son, Jack (Aneta) Van Horn and daughter Sharlee VanHorn, daughter-in-law Patricia VanHorn; grandchildren Norry (Kelly) VanHorn, Devon (Luke) VanHorn, Jacquelyn (Matthew) Richter, and Tabbetha (David) Price; great-grandchildren Nicholas, Olivia, Sawyer, and Penn, one great-great-granddaughter Matilda Grace, many nieces and nephews spread across the USA, and her dear Freeburg friend Debra Kratzer. Private services will be held for the family. A celebration of Life service will be held at a later date at the discretion of the family.
