Stephen James Malaney, 80, of Middleburg, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, after a courageous struggle with kidney disease.
Steve was born on September 8, 1945, to the late James W. & Thelma A. (Rider) Malaney in the Wesley Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL. After the family moved back to West Milton, PA, Steve graduated from Milton Area Senior High School, Milton in 1963. He went on to study at Penn State University with a B.S. in history. Steve wore many career hats over the years from Operations Manager for a trucking firm; a correctional officer at U.S. Penitentiary high security, Lewisburg; Casino Host on cruise ships which included Russian & Dutch ships; worked for a law firm in Selinsgrove and a local landscaping firm. In the late 1970’s to middle 80’s Steve owned and operated the “Upstairs Down” Bar & Grill in Selinsgrove. Though it was thriving, he sold it.
In 1989, Steve met his wife, Noreen, at a support group held in a local church. They were united in marriage by Pastor emeritus Wm. D. Jones in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Middleburg on July 13, 2000.
Steve purchased “The Stone House” in 1986. Having never been in Middleburg, he was in awe with the house. He took a year off to demo interior to bring it back to original beauty. During that restoration (his true labor of love), he became interested in learning the Tin smithing trade using the old tools from the 1800’s thus apprenticeship and then spinoff to “The Stone House”, Colonial Period Lighting Fixtures. A catalogue was developed and eventually a website. In 1999, Steve & Noreen were invited to The White House as one of many craftsmen to make (2) ornaments for the Blue Room Christmas tree.
He was a life member of the Snyder County Historical Society.
Steve was a private and quiet person, but also a very witty and fun soul who took on many passions. One of which included his backyard oasis. He had incredible landscaping talent. He found comfort and peace in planting and landscaping which included being in tune with nature and using it to express himself. He enjoyed the sanctuary of his home where he could attend to the “needs and feeds” of the wild-life he had come to so thoroughly enjoy. He loved reading informative magazines and keeping up with politics and world affairs.
Steve would often tell his wife many stories of childhood days and all his experiences during his traveling years. When Steve was young, he enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing. He found happiness in lifes simple pleasures, dining out with his wife, taking car rides along country roads together and relaxing in his backyard.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, his maternal grandparents Roy D. & Carrie M. (Reedy) Rider; paternal grandparents, Leo J. & Elizabeth H. (Wohleiter) Malaney; uncles Paul E. & Harold E. Rider; Aunt Erma E. (Rider) Burris and a brother-in-law, Rick L. DePhillips. He is survived by his wife, Noreen “Reenie” K.; daughter, Lisa J. (Jerry R.) Hubbard, granddaughters Alexandra. “Allie” C. (Richard) Smith, Rebecca L. Wizon (Sebastian Seymore) & Kristen N. (Lee) Wizon; sisters, Christine A. (Joseph) Notarangelo & Marceen E. Malaney; nieces and nephew; Jamie A. Engleman (William R. III Davis), Michael J. (Emily) Acedo-Malaney; Erica M. Acedo-Malaney Sucher; (4)great nieces and (2) great nephews. He is also survived by his wife's siblings and their spouses and families. And his feline friend, Gracie.
